The Inspiration of VelvetDoor Studios

The Inspiration for Velvet Door Studios

I had a dream to build a small house and a music studio. Something far away from the world, that I could tinker away in, and extricate the musical noises bouncing around in my head.

After many years of planning, and the trials and tribulations of building in a foreign land, the dream is now a reality.

Was it hard? Yes. Was it time consuming? Yes. Was it as easy as I thought it would be (thinking the same materials & labour would be available to me as they are in the West)? Absolutely not.

Am I happy with the result after all the delays & tribulations? 100% YES.

I am very grateful to all those that helped and put up with my questions, and to all those that repeatedly listened to my rambling about the why’s, how’s, and associated problems. I’m probably most happy that friends and family can stop asking me ‘is it finished yet?’. !!!!!

Constructing Velvet Door Studios

Sourcing materials on a faraway island was not easy to say the least, let alone the actual studio recording equipment. Again something I took for granted that I thought was easily accessible.  That being said, building materials were sourced from Bali, Java & Sumatra, and the recording equipment was either made here in Bali, or purchased from Australia, USA, Jakarta, Hong Kong &  the UK.

A lot of design and redesign,  phone calls & emails, back & forth with professionals around the globe, to help me with specs on soundproofing. Thankfully, the project was met with positivity and interest from the many that offered their services to me, and I am forever grateful.

The Finished Recording Studio

What you see below is a bunch of photos of the project in its creation, and the concrete shell that sat there for a couple of years, while I meditated on the design, and also in the manifesting of the money to finance the project.

I can’t tell you how many times I was found sitting in the corner of an empty concrete room, dreaming about the placement of the pieces of the puzzle, and how to make it (a) soundproof (b) functional (c) ergonomically smooth (d) able to capture enough natural light, whilst being able to see the jungle valley views.

I hope this inspires others to follow their dreamings, no matter how long it may take you. Remember: anything is possible !
